To first hear the word "cancer" in relation to you can be frightening and disorienting.
It's normal to feel that way, but you don't have to feel alone. From your very first visit, your doctor and care team will develop a plan of action - with a treatment designed to eradicate your specific disease.
You'll have a million questions. Feel free to ask your Education Nurse, who'll be there to help explain the specifics about your disease, about how things work at the Center, about your treatment and what to expect during treatment. You'll also learn the possible side-effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatment, and how to alleviate them; the importance of nutrition; and what to do if you experience any problems.
At the Center, we know you are not your diagnosis. You're an individual, and we'll treat you that way, involving you in every decision.
A fully licensed pharmacy on-site at the Center, MCC Apothecary, is ready to create custom medications for your treatment. The Apothecary supplies medications to treat cancer and blood disorders, nutritional products, vaccinations, and drugs to alleviate side effects. No need to worry about standard pharmacies carrying what you need. You'll have it here.
Please feel free to have a family member or friend accompany you during your visits, whether for an appointment, diagnostic test or treatment. If you use a wheelchair or walker, or have difficulty moving about on your own, please bring a companion for assistance.
It's very important, however, that the person with you should not have a cold, flu-like symptoms, or recent exposure to a contagious illness such as measles, mumps, chickenpox, pneumonia, strep throat, bronchitis or mononucleosis. Other patients undergoing treatment often have weakened immune systems, and are very susceptible to these illnesses.
For the same reason, we strongly recommend that you do not bring children with you to the Center, as they are typically exposed to a variety of bacteria and viruses that might prove harmful or even dangerous to patients with weakened immune systems.
Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult at all times and are required to remain in the main lobby area while at the Center.
