Living with Cancer

Cancer does not mean putting your life on hold.

Of course it does mean changes, but your care team and all the staff members at Montgomery Cancer Center are committed to helping you overcome the long-term challenges of cancer - while making each day as healthy, active and enjoyable as possible.

Wellness

What is wellness? It's the optimal overall physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health of a person. It can be boosted through activities such as physical exercise, good nutrition, and being a part of a support group. Efforts to promote wellness help to eliminate stresses which can compromise the immune system - and may even stimulate the body to heal itself.

At Montgomery Cancer Center, we'll work with you to achieve and maintain an optimal level of wellness. We provide programs to help you learn to manage your stress levels and complement your treatments.

Longevity

As medical technology continues to advance, those who live with cancer are living longer than ever before. Long-term survival rates are increasing for many different forms of the disease, and even short-term rates have risen in the past few decades.

Life is precious. And so is time spent with loved ones. Montgomery Cancer Center is committed to providing you with more of both.

Hope

Medical advances. The latest treatments. State-of-the-art technology. They go a long way toward achieving wellness. Hope takes us the rest of the way.

Hope is something you can feel at Montgomery Cancer Center. It's also something you can act on. Whatever your prognosis, we know - and you should know - that you're an individual. Your doctor and the rest of your care team will customize a treatment-and-wellness program to meet your needs, all the while taking the time to listen to you and your concerns. It's our goal to give you more than you'd hoped for.

Exercise

Cancer - as well as some of the treatments that fight it - can leave patients feeling drained. This is normal, and at different stages of your treatment, your body will need extended periods of rest. On the other hand, one of the best aids to your care team's treatment regimen is gentle exercise. With your doctor's permission, you can begin a program that includes walking, water movement, Tai Chi, yoga and other low-intensity exercises that help you maintain your energy, strength and endurance. Be sure to start slowly, and always drink plenty of water.

Your doctor and nurses can work closely with you to evaluate how you're feeling and what type of exercise, if any, would be of most benefit. You'll likely find that your prescribed exercise reduces stress, improves your sleep, and helps you feel better.

Six-Month/Annual Follow-Ups

Even when your treatment is completed, rest assured, your care continues. We'll have you make an appointment for a follow-up visit in six months, where we'll evaluate your progress. And just to make sure that things are as they should be, we'll want to see you for annual check-ups after that.

Giving Back

Together we can make life better, not just for you, but for others with cancer. Many of the invaluable volunteers who give so much of their time to help patients at Montgomery Cancer Center were once patients themselves, or are family members of former patients. You can't underestimate the hope one receives from another who's taken the same journey - and who now is a survivor.

Another way you can contribute to the fight against cancer is to make a monetary donation to Cancer Wellness Foundation of Central Alabama.

Once you've battled cancer, you feel even better when you give back.
